World Refugee Day | A Moment of Humanity

Today, on World Refugee Day, I am reflecting on a few personal moments from my work with refugees—moments that made me realize why I do this work and why humanity is vital.

    A Life-or-Death Decision
A few years ago, I received a call that changed everything. I was on the overnight helpline when I was told to expect a call from a woman in danger. She and another survivor were in immediate danger. Their lives were at risk, and I had to act quickly.

When I confirmed their location, I was shocked to find out it was close to my neighborhood. I couldn’t believe it—their lives were in danger just a few streets away from where I live. Then I hesitated a lot and talked to my manager a lot, and we hesitated together, and in the end we decided together. I went to meet them, guided them to safety, and did whatever I could to help them.

That night taught me something important. Humanitarian work isn’t just about following protocols. When lives are at risk, there’s no time for the usual procedures. Acting in the moment, even if it deviates from the rules, is the right thing to do.

    The Power of Gratitude
Another story that stays with me is one about gratitude. A while after, I got a call from a woman I had helped briefly. She was a survivor of violence and war, someone who had experienced unimaginable pain. Despite everything, she called just to say thank you.

At first, I thought it was a simple gesture, but then I realized how powerful it was. This woman had endured so much, yet she found the strength to be grateful for something that should have been hers.

It wasn’t just politeness. It was strength. Despite everything she’d been through, she could still acknowledge a simple act of kindness. It reminded me that the work we do is not about heroic acts—it’s about restoring basic rights, lightening burdens, and helping someone feel safe, even for just a moment.

    Reflections on World Refugee Day
These experiences, though different, share one thing in common: the power of human connection, compassion, and the bond that is formed when we stand together.

On this World Refugee Day, let’s honor the resilience of those who persevere despite overwhelming challenges. Let’s be inspired by the humanity they remind us of and the importance of our work to protect and empower them. Every act of support, right-based approach, no matter how small, contributes to making a difference.
